People tend to say that synchronization is failure concept in SSAS but fortunately(or unfortunately I have been working on a system which does a sync 3 times a day(SQL 2005,SP2,25 GB database)
We did face a lot issues but it was a great learning!
Some of the issues that we faced are
1. Sync fails when many users are using the Reporting instance(Sync happens from Processing instance to Repoting instance). We had raised a call with MS and we were told that during the final stages of the sync, SSAS needs a write lock over the reporting instance database(obviously as this is going to be replaced by the Processing instance database - in crude terms) and it cancels all the queries which are running on the Reporting instance.
But a query on distinct count measure group might not get cancelled and hence causing the failure.I was also told that SP3 would improve the situation(not solve) but have not tried it yet.
We don't have much issues as 2 of our sync happens when there are no users and the 3rd one happens with minimal users on the system.
2. Sync fails when an on access virus scan runs on your server. To solve this issue, you need to exclude the SSAS data folders from the virus scan.
3. The risk is that, if sync fails, it MIGHT corrupt your Reporting instance which means the system is unavailable. What happens when SSAS instance corrupts itself is more interesting.
When the SSAS database gets corrupted, you wont be able to do any operations on the SSAS server including creating/deleting databases. The following method helped me solve these issues
You could rename or move the data folder(located at Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\OLAP\Data) and create a new empty folder called “Data” after stopping the SSAS service. You should be able to connect and create new databases once you start the service. This method assumes that you don’t need other existing databases on the server.
If you would like to preserve the existing databases, then you could delete the ‘YourDatabase.N.DB’ folder and ‘YourDatabase.N.DB.xml’ files in the Data folder(after stopping the service) which should solve your issue. (‘YourDatabase’ is the name of the database which you were trying to restore. It would be better if you could backup the existing data folder before trying this!).
Lets hope we don't have such issues in SSAS 2008!

CaMpUs HaPpEnInGs--Part II
(Please do read CAMPUS HAPPENINGS before this one)
As TCS's numbers were less than expected, a sort of panic was created among the students.. and so called waiting students(means waiting for big companies... Dream offers were not introduced at this point of time) were preparing to attend the companies without waiting.
Next one was INFY and he did manage to take good numbers(160+)...
All the 5 people who were shortlisted for interviews were selected. Total number of offers of my class went up to 31... and the next one- Wipro offered 52( 2 from my class)...
The top 4 was over.. With 33 offers, we had already made a point... We have already done better than MCA's and equal to most of the engineering branches...Even the engineering students started saying that we are performing well and only at this point some of them came 2 know the existence of such a branch at CEG.
I should say I was really satisfied with the performance of our class, but I was not satisfied with myself... I thought CTS was not the place whr I should start my career( news from variousplaced that CTS is on recruiting spree throughout India made me think a bit..)
will continue.....!!!!!

Any one entering a campus will have the dream of placements...
Tat too in a campus like anna...
I had too...
I still remember asking one of the final yr CSE guy "Will I get placed?" during my first semester!!
(Initially he laughed and then started ragging me after tat!)
But it was INFY which changed the mood of placements... Coming late in 2003 campus, it took 205 from Anna Univ and from that point the placement records have never looked back..205 was a record at that time...
I was at TATA Infotech, Bangalore when the 2004 placements started and i was gettin continuous updates about the placements...It was great to hear the numbers...230(TCS),250(Infy),283(CTS),Wipro(105).... During the proj I started preparing for campus (may be only for infy and cts as I was just solving puzzles!!!)
When it came to the placement representative work, i hesitated a bit to take up ( As i was thinking that it may affect my preparation and also Sadeesh(BE) was against it). But finally i made my mind as Sathish(my class) also accepted to be representative. I would appreciate this decision of mine always in the future as i believe the work I did as a PR was one of my best acheivements.
The placement work started with the design of brochures ( which was not useful as we expected) ... My self & Kali (My class mate) took more than one month to complete the design. Brochure came good and thanks to the department for paying for it.
I really didnt know what to do as a PR initially (but in the later part the need was obvious... A little courage(!!!),Willingness to spend a good part of your time and most importanly LOT , LOT & LOT of patience). The most challenging part was making sure that the companies coming in knows the existence of such a course at Anna University.
I did not have any problem with CTS or TCS or INFY as they mentioned that all branches are eligible. But I did not have any idea about other companies... I never expected that all these worries would disappear in a single day... That day was the 1st day of our campus placements 2006...29th may 2006. (I would rather say Campus festival!!!)...
1600 appeared …. 1100 short listed for interviews… 504 offered …. In college
42 appeared…….. 32 short listed……………………. 22 offered…… in my class
(Best strike rate was my class!!!)
As 50 percent of my class got through the first company, we had very few worries there after and TCS was the next… In the ppt, TCS gave a build up as though they are going to offer all the remaining students… but most of us were disappointed as TCS only offered 76 students and 4 from my class…. It was said that TCS purposely rejected many in the HR rounds…. (No one knows what happened inside!!!)

It was my friend sadeesh(with TRILOGY now) who inspired me to join anna univ...He joined B.E CSE here ...
(fortunately or unfortunately i could not get tat many marks!!) When we joined in 2001, it was the IT recession
period and the campus placements were very very average one! Even 30% of CSE were not placed at that time..
